Jónína Mjöll Thormodsdottir comes from Iceland. The love of nature which has its source in her native country, as also the changes between that country and longer stays abroad, are implicit in her choice of artistic themes. It is the depiction of birds, mainly migratory or aquatic birds, either in flight or on the water, which the artist treats through such varied media as drawing, painting, prints, sculpture, photo and film.

Her focus in these works is on the themes of movement, weightlessness, flight, freedom, emptiness and space. Very important to her is the experimental employment of materials. For this reason, for example, she makes use in her objects of natural materials such as bones and feathers, and her paintings are done on natural wood surfaces, the grain of which reinforces the impression of the structure of the water‘s surface. In the last year she has also concerned herself with the subject of ice. She has produced a first group of works which concentrate on the relationship between sky, water and earth and on the theme of transience. Seen in its physical aspect melting ice simply represents the change from one aggregate state to another, but viewed against the background of the proximity of her native Iceland to the Arctic circle, to melting glaciers and the disappearing polar ice cap, Jónína Mjöll Thormodsdottir‘s works contain a warning with regard to both the threatening ecological crisis and the fragility of a natural habitat.
